Cellphone calls alter brain activity

A recent research has unearthed that spending 50 minutes with a cellphone plastered to your ear is enough to change brain cell activity in the part of the brain closest to the antenna.

According to scientists at the National Institute of Health, the study does not settle recurring concerns of a link between cell phones and brain cancer.

According to Dr. Nora Volkow of the NIH whose study was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, glucose metabolism (a sign of brain activity) increases in the brain in people who were exposed to a cellphone in the area close to the antenna.

The study was meant to examine how the brain reacts to electromagnetic fields caused by wireless phone signals.

Volkow added that she was surprised that the weak electromagnetic radiation from cellphones could affect brain activity but she said the findings do not shed any light on whether cellphones cause cancer. This study does not in any way indicate that. What the study does is to show that the human brain is sensitive to electromagnetic radiation from cellphone exposures.

  2. @ Zienab: you may be an engineer. Do you know our nerves is a bunch of nuerons(brain cells are high dense nuerons) which store as well as transmit informations/messages in the form of ions(ie electron exchange). Any radiation has its effect on these tranfers more or less. when you speak ur cellfone antenna is near your ears will cause these tranfer activity rate to vary. what i am telling is hypothetical, now it is clinicaly proved by that doctor, so dont curse her/him .
when you talk ur brain activity changes for enabling you to talk. while you talk in a cell, then yur talk as well as radiation will affect ur brain activity.i think its a point

  3. Point noted. How can you tell the difference? There is no qualitative difference. The brain doesn't discriminate between "cellphone heat" and "thought heat."

Talking about radiation, how about radiation from CRT screens, CFL lamps, thyratron ("microwave oven") and other assorted things? How severe is the threat due to mobile phone when compared to these?

The discussion of neurons is quite irrelevant to this topic.

  5. Dr. Nora Volkow is Leon Trotsky's great-granddaughter. Ouch!

  6. And a well-respected Federal Official. Point noted. However, inconclusive studies are unlikely to bring on any legislation regarding cellphone standards, and such legislation is required to do something about it. In the meantime...I'll have to hunt for a headset with a long cable.

  7. it is possible that cell phone alter brain activity and may be attack on our nervous system .. So i heard that if cell phone was a food stuff it never get a license to make because it is very injurious to health
